WW1 Commemoration

The village group who have come together to organise some events/activities to commemorate the Great War, would like to give you a couple of important dates for your diaries:
Sunday the 3rd of August: A First World War Centenary Commemoration.
A service to remember at St Peter’s Church, Addingham, commencing at 5.00pm. An opportunity to remember, reflect and give thanks for all those who served in our armed forces to enable us to live in freedom and peace. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Tuesday the 5th of August: A special screening of the 1999 film ‘The Trench’ in the Memorial Hall, Addingham at 7.30pm. The film portrays a group of young British soldiers on the eve of the Battle of the Somme. A star studded cast includes Paul Nicholls, James D’Arcy, Ben Whishaw and Daniel Craig. Bring your own refreshments including alcoholic beverages ! The cost is only £4.00. All proceeds will go towards the publication of a village WW1 book, currently being researched by Catherine Snape. This book will highlight not only those who lost their lives but also the sometimes forgotten, survivors.
To book your seat please ring or text either Gill Battarbee on 07762824800. Or contact any committee member. Alternatively drop an email to: info@addinghamcivicsociety.co.uk and tell us how many tickets you want.

Society Publications

Most of you will know that over the years the Society has built up quite a collection of village books. Hopefully, around Spring time next year this collection will be enhanced by the addition of a WW1 publication. As mentioned above and in previous newsletters the research for this book is being undertaken by Catherine Snape. Details of the many residents who served in the Great War will be documented along with events, news items and stories that took place in the village during the war. It will make fascinating reading.
We are also planning to start work soon, on a short publication: Main Street Memories – a walk down Main Street in the late 1940’s. Look out for this.
Finally, our most popular publication – Country walks around Addingham by Alison Armstrong, will very shortly be revised. Our very own Jonathan White will be working with Alison to carry out some revisions and hopefully arrange for a new edition to be published. In the meantime the current publication is now available at a reduced price of £2. Order yours by emailing the Society or contacting any committee member. Hurry there are very few left.

The Tour de France Addingham Weekend

Well, wasn’t that exciting ! The village has never quite seen anything like that and never will again (almost certainly anyway !) Just under 200 of the best cyclists in the world graced our village streets (twice !) and what a spectacle. Thousands of visitors flooded in and savoured some wonderful hospitality, so a big ‘well done’ to all the local businesses for their efforts. The weather was kind for both stages and everyone associated with the biggest sporting event in the world have been heaping praise onto the efforts of the Welcome to Yorkshire team. At a local level the Society would like to congratulate Richard Hunter Rowe and his ‘The Tour Addingham’ committee for all their hard work in helping
to create something, just a bit special, for our village.
