History and What We Do

'We were established in 1978. From a relatively small membership initially it grew to 260 in 1987 and now in 2011 is 420 and growing. We are a Registered Charity and have a team of officers and an executive  of committee of 13. The committee conducts society business and liaises closely with other village organisations. The society has links with Bradford Council, the Parish Council and numerous contacts for fund raising to carry out projects on behalf of the village

We are a member of the Yorkshire & Humber Association of Civic Societies (YHACS), which is the regional body through which we have access to contacts with numerous other societies.

We are also a member of the national body, Civic Voice, which replaced the Civic Trust in 2010. This organisation represents over 300 Societies around the country.

We benefit the village by providing action on civic issues, environmental changes and closely monitoring developments which may not be to the benefit of the village. Most recently the Society added its weight behind a successful campaign to stop the erection of 3 wind turbines near a local beauty spot.

Every year we arrange 9 Members evenings involving guest Speakers. We have 2 Coffee mornings with invitations to anyone in the Village to come along. our big social event is the Xmas party with around 80 people attending every year. We do a Village 'clean-up' in March every year......and the list goes on !

Looking ahead we have ambitious plans for the next 2 years including a multi purpose games area, the introduction of a 'blue plaque scheme' and to work with the Parish Council to prepare the 'Neighbourhood Plan'. We have recently (Jan 2012) launched a new website to help communicate with our members but also as a means of attracting new members.

Exciting times ahead for an organisation which is now very much the 'Voice of the Village.'
